How and When to Use Regarding and About

Hello to you,

Can you please explain the difference between the following words and phrases?

1. concerning
2. regarding
3. about
4. in respect of
5. with reference to
6. with regard to
7. relating to
8. in respect of
9. in connection with

I would especially like to know the difference between "regarding" and "about."

When used as prepositions, many of these words and phrases are synonyms.

Examples
The student asked a question concerning his homework.

The student asked a question regarding his homework.

The student asked a question about his homework.

The student asked a question with regard to his homework.

The student asked a question with reference to his homework.

The student asked a question relating to his homework.

The student asked a question in connection with his homework.

When comparing regarding and about, they are very similar, but the word about has more uses and is more common than regarding, which is more formal.

Examples
1. The student asked a question regarding his homework.
2. The student asked a questions about his homework.

Sentence #2 is more common in the English language.

Here are some other uses for the word about that do not work with regarding.

Examples
1. He is about six feet tall.
2. The kids are about the house.
3. Breakfast is about ready.
